Western Meadowlark at Rios

This is a great month to see a beautiful songbird at Rios Ave West trail at San Elijo Lagoon. The Western Meadowlark is found foraging on the ground looking for insects, seeds and worms. Western Meadowlark, Sturnella neglecta measures 9.5 inches long with a wingspan of 14.5 inches. Males and females look alike.

Walking out to the peninsula trail on Rios, I spot a Western Meadowlark. Here are some shots of this beautiful songbird alert and posing at times. Also a sequence of him freezing and blending into the ground-cover around him when a threat from above appears.

Have a wonderful week everyone!
