The Grebe and the Pipefish

A short walk from the parking lot of the Grand Avenue Bridge http://www.sdrp.org/projects/GrandAvenueBridge/GrandAvenueBridge.htm in Del Mar and heading west towards the walkway that follows the San Dieguito River, I spot an Eared Grebe with prey. Here are the photos showing the grebe with his prize.

An Eared Grebe is just surfacing from a dive with something wrapped around his neck. It appears to be a slippery prey and at times hard to control. I have seen this fish before. It is a pipefish that lives in the eel grass. Here are the photos showing the battle of the grebe and the pipefish.

Have a great week everyone!

  1. Dear Evie and Jo,
If you go toBBC - Radio 4 - Home, there is a fascinating and moving audio story about owls! There are 5 episodes, 15 minutes long, of a nice woman who lives in Devon, England, telling her encounters with owls in a very poetic and thoughtful manner. Please have a listen...I was captivated!
