Many times when photographing birds, there are some that I
cannot identify but need an expert's help. So I thought it might be fun to post some here on this blog and see if anyone can help ID these
recent photos taken at the San Elijo Nature Center Trail.
Here are five Mystery Bird photos taken on April 11, 2016 at San
Elijo Lagoon Nature Center:
Photo #1 taken at the middle of the boardwalk facing west
about 80ft from the south end of the boardwalk.
Photo #2
Same bird as above but different angle.
Photo #3
This one also taken at the boardwalk area but on the east
side of the boardwalk about 60ft from the south end.
Photo #4
Taken on the west side of the boardwalk about 75ft from
the south end.
Photo #5
#5-a Same bird as above but showing a little more of the
underbelly and tail area.

some type of Finch Eastern maybe? Take care
ReplyDeleteBoth birds are a bit scruffy, perhaps undergoing molt. The shape and patterns show through, though.
ReplyDeletePhotos #1-4 all show a very stout bill with slight hook at the tip. The bill alone identifies the family as vireos, and the thicker legs support this. Wingbars and full spectacles. Sides are white.
Photos #5-6 show a longer thinner bill. Include the scruffy black streaks across the upper chest, two wingbars, hint of eyering, and hint of yellow on throat and sides of breast, and this bird reveals itself.
Answer: Bell's (Least) Vireo and Yellow-rumped (Audubon's) Warbler.
Thank You so very much Greg for taking the time to ID the photos. I really appreciate your knowledge of our birds.
