This weekend is Easter and it's the day that my family and
I celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. I want to wish everyone
a wonderful Easter !
Just a few photos to show you a House Wren hoping to
attract a mate by showing his wonderful talent to build nests, lots of nests!
They are very vocal and just a wonderful bird to watch in your backyard. This
particular Wren is having a great time putting nesting material in half a dozen
birdhouses I have hanging in my backyard. Yes, he has attracted a mate!
You know it's springtime when you hear the singing of
Wrens. Today turned out to be a bright and beautiful morning and this little guy
got me out of the house with my camera ready to see where this beautiful vocals
were coming from.
There he is , perched on my persimmon tree. It's a House Wren. His calls are
very distinct and you know if there is one close by.
House Wren, Troglodytes aedon measures 4.75 inches
long with a wingspan of 6 inches.
He is so adorable. Males and females look alike so there is no way of knowing
which one I am looking at but the way he is calling and singing, I am guessing
this is a male and is calling for a mate.
He is singing his heart out. LOL, what a sweet little
Wren.
He checks out the inside of the cricket house.
Now he hops over to the next birdhouse.
Wonder what he is looking for in a acceptable house.
Hops a few feet over to another one. This one is a very well built birdhouse
but he isn't impressed and comes right out.
He is so very cute. Spiders are one of their food sources. They eat insects such
as grasshoppers, beetles, crickets, caterpillars also spiders, millipedes, and
snails. They forage by gleaning insects from leaves and shrubs. (Info from Ibird
pro)
Back to the cricket house. This is my very favorite one. I hope he picks this
one!
LOL, He glances over at me as to say " don't get too excited, my mate will be the one
that will pick the house" . Yes, it will be the female's choice to the nest site
that she feels is the best for her.
A few more strings of calls letting all the females in the area that he has got
the best territory and come and see he great nests!
He looks over cricket and appears to like the little guy. : )
Oops, he has flown into my garden and now inspecting the apple tree birdhouse.
It's the one I found at the thrift store and is hanging on the apple tree.
This birdhouse is adorable . I purchase it at the California Backyard
birds store in Encinitas. They carry some really great things for bird lovers
and of course great custom bird feeds.
Well look, he is back at the cricket house! Perched at the top of the
rood he has nesting material in his beak!
He must really like this one because he is announcing to the world he is
there!
More nesting material!
Little bit of struggle putting it in the house.
LOL, mister cricket is willing to help.
More calls.
Wow, now he is bringing nest material to the green trailer!
Done with this one and he flies off.
Look who is back with more nest materials at the cricket house!
Yup, mister ambitious!
LOL, and one more house to build a nest in! It's the lemonade stand birdhouse
hanging in my lemon tree : ) Good thing this was repaired after the storm and now is in good condition.
A little bit of difficulty but he never gives up!
At least he can use his nest material for a nice little rest perch at the lemonade stand birdhouse! Hope to report on which of these houses the female has picked and see if we get some babies this year! Have a great weekend.
Hi Josie, happy Easter! Nice pictures of the house wren. We have them up here as well. This year we had a resident Stellar Blue Jay who never left. He fattened up on cat food I put out for our cat, Bear. Stay safe! =Mark=
ReplyDeleteHi Jo, what a lovely account of that ambitious little guy. It was wonderful to see all your adorable bird houses, too. We hope you are well and that we might see you at the lagoon before long. Regards, Carolyn
