Reddish Egret at the San Elijo Lagoon

Sometimes when you least expect it, a bird subject flies by that makes your whole week of straining your eyes in the hot summer sun looking for interesting bird subjects all worth it!

Spotting a rare visitor to our lagoon, a juvenile Reddish Egret, has made a good week into a super one!  Here he is flying north following the tide channel as viewed from the San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center Loop Trail.

Reddish Egret, Egretta rufescens measures 30 inches with a wingspan of 46 inches.

Unique pale chalky color as described in Sibley Guide to Birds second edition..

Pale stripe on the underwing.

He flies by just above the pickleweeds on the west side of the tide channel.

He appears to be a 1st year juvenile.

Getting a look at his underwing.

Legs are all dark.

 A beauty!

Nice reddish color plumage coming in on his head.

Last few shots.

He disappears on the other side of a dirt mound on the west side of the tide channel. What a great morning this has been! Time to head for home.

Have a wonderful week everyone!
