Young Red-tailed Hawk at Rios

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day holiday. The young Red-tailed Hawk has a successful morning hunt and gorges herself filling her crop. LOL, I think many of us can relate to the stuffed feeling after our Thanksgiving meals.

These photos are of the young Red-tailed Hawk taken near the lookout area on Rios West Trail at San Elijo Lagoon. She has captured and killed a Ridgway's Rail and was in the process of finishing her meal when I arrived. I immediately noticed how full her crop appeared. She allows me to get close to take a few shots. Take a look!

Only feathers and feet left of her prey.
Shot of what is left of the prey.

I watched the young hawk fly southeast until she disappeared over the hills. Thrilled to be able to get some close-up shots of this magnificent raptor, a rainbow appeared as the dark clouds opened up to let the sun shine through. What a magical moment! Have a beautiful week everyone!
